November - engineering
This month we worked really hard on the letter E, which stands for Engineering in STEM. Half of the class worked on making gliders using aerodynamics to fly and glide the plane. All we could use was paper, Sellotape and one straw. Some gliders worked and some didn’t, and some worked better than others!
The second half of the class got to make lollipop stick grenades and they were given only five lollipop sticks to work with. The first group to get it was Jason, Fin and Jack. It was made into a triangle-like shape. When it was dropped on the floor the tension holding the lollipop sticks together released and exploded out. It worked because of the potential energy stored up inside. It was really fun to learn about!
We made lollipop stick grenades. I worked with Jason and Fin – we were the first group to do it. Sean, Anna and I presented it on stage in the assembly for the whole school to see.
I was in the glider-making group and I worked with George. We made a small glider and we had to use a limited amount of things to do it. We then presented the gliders at the assembly.

October STEM Focus (5th & 6th Class)
The STEM focus for 5th and 6th Class in October was Maths. The children researched different mathematicians and learned about their famous discoveries. The children worked with a partner to create posters for displaying the information they researched. They learned about Albert Einstein, Joseph Fourier, Grace Hopper, Florence Nightingale, Evelyn Boyd Granville, Paul Erdos, Hypatia of Alexandria, Stephen Hawking, Nikola Tesla and Ada Lovelace.
Maths Week also fell during the month of October and 5th and 6th Class designed some fun Maths questions for their buddies in Junior and Senior Infants. 5th and 6th Class then took the buddies on a Maths Trail around the school and in the yard to answer the Maths questions in their booklets, which everyone had great fun doing!
